Supply Chain Integration Using EDI & XML

IVIS Professional Services linking Warehouse Management System and Electronic Data Interchange platform

IVIS Group has worked with a number of organisations seeking to improve their supply chain through the application of web technologies. One such organisation was a portal operator who wanted to improve the interaction between their warehouses and suppliers. They already operated an Electronic Data Interchange or EDI mechanism with key suppliers but wanted to make this more flexible and extend it to all suppliers.

To do this IVIS Group consultants developed an XML layer to sit between the warehouse management system and the EDI platform. This enabled suppliers using EDI to continue to do so while allowing other suppliers to interact directly with the XML layer using the Internet. The core system was then enhanced to allow improved stock management and the generation of on-line purchase orders and payment authorisations. These modifications reduced cost through a more efficient purchasing process and by improving the stock management process reduced the cash requirements of the business.
